Bronchodilator responsiveness following a negative methacholine challenge test.

چکیده
Asthma is a complex disease of airway inflammation, which results in airway remodeling and hyper-responsiveness.1 Because asthma-related symptoms are not specific to asthma, diagnosis requires objective data from pulmonary function tests (PFT). Bronchodilator responsiveness and airway responsiveness to provocational stimuli (eg, methacholine, dry-gas hyperpnea) help establish the diagnosis of asthma.1 This report describes a patient who had several asthma risk factors and marked responsiveness to inhaled bronchodilators, but no airway responsiveness to methacholine inhalation.

Assessment of Bronchodilator Responsiveness Following Methacholine-Induced Bronchoconstriction in Children With Asthma
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate bronchodilator responsiveness (BDR) following methacholine-induced bronchoconstriction and to determine differences in BDR according to clinical parameters in children with asthma. METHODS The methacholine challenge test was performed in 145 children with mild to moderate asthma, and the provocative concentration causing a 20% decline in FEV1 (...

Current asthma is often diagnostically excluded by the presence of normal bronchial responsiveness. We report on a TDI-induced occupational asthma patient with normal bronchial responsiveness. He had suffered from shortness of breath during and after TDI exposure for several months. His initial methacholine bronchial challenge test showed a negative response. The bronchoprovacation test with TD...
متن کاملBronchodilator Response in Patients with Persistent Allergic Asthma Could Not Predict Airway Hyperresponsiveness
: Anticholinergics, or specific antimuscarinic agents, by inhibition of muscarinic receptors cause bronchodilatation, which might correlate with activation of these receptors by the muscarinic agonist methacholine. The aim of this study was to determine whether a positive bronchodilator response to the anticholinergic ipratropium bromide could predict airway hyperresponsiveness in patients with...
متن کاملBronchodilator response to salbutamol after spontaneous recovery from nonspecific bronchial provocation tests in asthma.
Assessment of airway responsiveness by bronchoprovocation and bronchodilatation tests is important in the diagnostic work-up protocol of bronchial asthma and it would be convenient to undertake both tests on the same occasion. However, it is not known whether this can be done accurately. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of a prior bronchial provocation test on the bronchodilator respo...
متن کاملBronchodilator effect of deep inspiration and bronchoconstriction-triggered cough
BACKGROUND Cough in the patients with cough variant asthma is triggered by bronchoconstriction, which responds to bronchodilator therapy. Following airway narrowing induced by inhaled methacholine, deep inspiration (DI) causes dilation of the airways in both asthmatic and non-asthmatic subjects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between bronchodilator effect of DI...
